Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875–1950) was an American author, best known for his series of fantasy and adventure novels, including the Tarzan and John Carter of Mars series. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Burroughs was the son of a businessman. He attended a military academy and worked various jobs before enlisting in the U.S. Cavalry. Burroughs's first success came with the serialization of his novel A Princess of Mars in the pulp magazine All-Story in 1912. He quickly followed this up with Tarzan of the Apes, which became an instant bestseller and made Burroughs an international celebrity. Over the course of his career, he wrote more than 80 novels and short stories, with many of them going on to be adapted into films, television shows, and other media. Burroughs's works were popular for their vivid, imaginative settings and thrilling action sequences, as well as for their commentary on social issues and human nature.
