Este volumen incluye los libros VIII-XV, en los que inicialmente demuestra la inutilidad de los dioses tradicionales romanos, debate sobre teología con los filósofoos, sobre todo platónicos, y razona que los espíritus buenos desean adorar a un solo Dios. Finalmente, emprende su explicación cristiana de la historia, que comienza con el origen de la ciudad de Dios, de la creación del mundo al pecado original, y continúa con la relación de las dos ciudades: la de Dios y la terrenal.
