About this item

About the Artist Sitar master Prem Joshua creates a musical synthesis extending beyond borders. Traveling between India and Europe for over twenty years, Prem Joshua has studied with some of India’s finest musicians, including sitar maestro Ustad Usman Khan. Joshua writes all of his compositions and arrangements, drawing deeply from the well of eastern traditions without losing the pulse of contemporary western music. A versatile musician who also plays Indian flute and soprano sax, he is constantly developing and refining his distinctive sound, blending the sensuous instrumentation of ancient India with evocative melodies, modern electronica grooves and danceable ethnic rhythms. His creative musical blend has brought recognition from critics, music lovers and the press throughout the world. The Times of India dubbed him the "new guru of east-west fusion." Accompanied by the versatile tabla and santoor player, Manish Vyas, Prem Joshua has toured around the world, giving highly acclaimed concerts in Malaysia, Japan, Israel, India, Europe and the USA. A native of Germany, he now lives in the beautiful Tuscan hills of Italy. Manish Vyas learned to play tabla at the best address for this complicated percussion instrument: Ustad Alla Rakha (the late father of Zakir Hussain). Born in India to a family of musicians he performed for many years as a singer, percussionist and composer in traditional kirtan bands, gathering plenty of knowledge about traditional folk, bhajans and the energetic Qawwali music from the sufi tradition. He is an accomplished player of the santoor, an instrument from Kashmir with 86 strings, as well as keyboards and the Indian harmonium. Manish has integrated many different styles into his music as a result of playing with many international musicians. He has toured worldwide with Prem Joshua. Product Description The River Ganges plays an integral role in India s everyday culture and spirituality. This watery ribbon feeds the land and cleanses the souls of millions on its winding journey from the Himalayas to the sea. Inspired by the legendary river s mythic power, world travelers and long-time collaborators Prem Joshua and Manish Vyas, east-west alchemists of the highest order, invite you to take a trip down your inner Ganges. Imbued with rich images of the East, Water Down The Ganges flows languidly from lush meditative ambience into rhythmic celebration of the great river of life. Disciples of some of India s most respected master musicians, Joshua and Manish present this masterfully crafted recording, a perfect balance between acoustic clarity and electronic boldness. Just as one never stands in the same river twice, Water Down The Ganges offers a refreshingly new experience with each listen. Review "Dedicated to the River Ganges in India, this water elegy is an upbeat blend of harmonious ambience and rhythmic energy. The musicians draw on the traditions of Indian tabla drums and Western jazz and sax. You feel like meditating or dancing to this music." --Mandala
