About this item

What we have here are Three Violin Concertos and a Sinfonia that have been reconstructed from other Bach works and manuscripts, and the overall impact of these works and the performances is extraordinary. The opening Sinfonia in D Major to an unknown cantata is a brilliant piece that sparkles the way the opening to the First Orchestra Suite does. The orchestra shines in a magnificent outburst. The D Minor Violin Concerto is a transcription of a harpsichord concerto. It is amazing how well the solo line transfers to the violin. It is a demanding solo part, but it fits so perfectly and naturally with the accompaniment that you will think it was originally composed for violin. Similarly the G Minor Concerto is a transcription of a harpsichord concerto and like the D Minor the solo part is wonderful. But here the orchestra accompaniment has been adjusted to fit the violin. This change along with others spread throughout the concerto make this sound like an entirely new work. The slow second movement is absolutely exquisite in its peacefulness. The disc ends with a rousing performance of the Concerto for Three Violins which is also a transcription, but here the solo parts have been altered to allow for the sonorities of the three violins. The performances by the Bach-Collegium of Stuttgart conducted by Helmuth Rilling are exceptional and the sound is warm and full, allowing the solo lines to appear and disappear into the orchestra. Contents: Sinfonia in D Major, BWV1045, for Violin solo, 3 Trumpets, Timpani, 2 Oboes, Strings and Basso Continuo; Concerto in D Minor, BWV1052R, for Violin solo, Strings and Basso Continuo; Concerto in G Minor, BWV1056R, for 3 Violins, Strings and Basso Continuo; Concerto in D Major, BWV1064R, for Violin Solo, Strings and Basso Continuo. Isabelle Faust, Christoph Poppen, Muriel Cantoreggi, Violins; The Bach Collegium, Stuttgart; Helmuth Rilling, Conductor.
