Luis Miguel is to be admired for his steadfast homage to the classic Mexican bolero, the romantic ballad that emerged in the 1950s. Over the course of 10 years, he produced four albums of bolero remakes, and introduced them to new generations of music fans. But enough was enough. With 33, Luis Miguel returns to the torchy pop ballads that were his forte before his bolero phase. It's good to report that Miguel is in great shape. He plumbs emotional depths on the classy "Un Te Amo," where a lover appreciates small blessings, and "Devuelveme el Amor," on visiting old friends, solitude, and desperation. But it's not all gloomy. Dance fun is evoked on "Te Necesito," with its fingersnapping beats and backing vocals by Take 6, and "Con Tus Besos," with its thrilling big horns, crisp percussions, and energetic singalong choruses. Production values are excellent throughout, and Luis Miguel's vocals are full, strong, and emotive. Songwriters include Armando Manzanero, Juan Luis Guerra, and Kike Santander.
