Losing Felicitas: A Story of Growing Up, Catholic School, and White Flight in Chicago - 6727

$8.72

What was it like growing up in the sixties in a neighborhood where families were facing the challenges of racial integration? Only six African Americans lived in the author’s neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago in 1960; by 1970 the neighborhood was 83% African American. In Losing Felicitas, the author recounts her memories of this time, along with stories that her classmates shared with her, and presents a brief history of social and political issues impacting Chicago and many other cities during this era.Losing Felicitas provides a different perspective on white flight. The adults of St. Felicitas parish welcomed black neighbors and the children of St. Felicitas School welcomed black classmates. But what was happening around them led their neighborhood, like many others like it, into a confusing time of blockbusters, neighborhood associations, street crime, people moving away in the middle of the night, kids getting chased, and kids fighting back.
