Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (1850- 1894) fue un novelista, poeta y ensayista escocés. La isla del tesoro es una novela de aventuras escrita en 1883 (publicada originalmente por entregas en la revista infantil Young Folks, entre 1881 y 1882 con el título de The Sea Cook, or Treasure Island). Jim Hawkins es un chico que junto a sus padres trabaja en la posada del Almirante Benbow. Un día aparece un marinero con la mejilla cortada, Billy Bones, cuya única posesión es un viejo cofre. La posada recibe la visita de un marinero ciego la misma noche que el padre de Jim muere. Éste amenaza a Bones diciéndole que más tarde él y sus esbirros le atacarán para recuperar el cofre. Bones muere de apoplejía, producto de su adicción al ron.
