The second novel in his Growth trilogy, and set in a fictionalised Indianapolis, it tells the story of three generations of the aristocratic Amberson family, navigating the period of rapid industrialization and socio-economic change experienced in America, from the end of the civil war to the start of the 20th century. George Amberson Minafer, the grandson of the family patriarch, grows up pampered by his mother Isabel and develops a haughty attitude, and sense of entitlement. But his life is set to change when he falls for Lucy Morgan, a sensible young debutante.
