ReConnected: Stories from Spinal Cord Tumor Survivors

Reconnect: a powerful concept for those of us who have had intramedullary spinal cord tumor (SCT) surgery. As SCT survivors, we strive for a reconnection between our central nervous systems and our bodies as we move through the healing process. There is, however, another type of connection that speaks to the intent of this book. As a community of people diagnosed with a rare tumor in a dangerous location, we know there is simply not enough information out there that speaks to the realities of life after diagnosis and surgery. This book is an attempt to help remedy that. ReConnected is a book of stories from nine SCT survivors and one lay health care worker. Taken together, these stories provide a multilayered view of how this complex condition affects lives. It is our wish that readers might identify with some of the experiences presented here, finding comfort, information, and hope in the process. After my surgery, I reached out to connect with others through my book ReWired: A Story of Recovery from Spinal Cord Tumor Surgery. The book details what my life had been like during the first year after surgery. Many people contacted me after reading it—some were looking for more information about surgical outcomes, others were curious about what my life had been like during the six years after surgery.
