The Enchiridion or Handbook of Epictetus is a short manual of Stoic ethical advice compiled by Arrian, a 2nd-century disciple of the Greek philosopher Epictetus. Although the content is mostly derived from the Discourses of Epictetus, it is not a summary of the Discourses but rather a compilation of practical precepts. Eschewing metaphysics, Arrian focuses his attention on Epictetus's work applying philosophy to daily life, making the work a manual for achieving mental freedom and happiness. This edition is based on the 1877 translation by George Long (1800-1879). Epictetus (55 AD - 135 AD) was a Greek Stoic philosopher born in the city of Hierapolis, Phrygia (modern day Turkey). He was born a slave, but later freed by his master. Epictetus had a great influence on Stoic philosophy, and his teachings were highly influential during the Roman Empire. Epictetus believed that individuals should take responsibility for their own actions, and that everyone should strive for virtue and moral excellence. He taught that life should be lived according to the principles of reason and self-control. He also asserted that external events should not determine one’s emotional state. Epictetus is best known for his writings, which were compiled by his pupil Arrian in the Discourses and Enchiridion. These works are still widely read today and contain many of his teachings on Stoic philosophy. His teachings focus on the idea that individuals should strive to live their lives according to the principles of reason and self-control. Epictetus was a major influence on the development of Stoic philosophy, and his teachings have had a lasting impact on many philosophers and writers of the modern era. His emphasis on the individual’s responsibility for their own actions and his emphasis on reason and self-control are still relevant in today’s world. His teachings on Stoic philosophy have been studied and discussed by many philosophers and writers, and his works remain an important source of inspiration for many.
