As a teenager, he went on to spend every spare moment at a local airport, offering to wash planes and pump gas—not for pay, but for the chance to be around pilots. Soon he began trading his work for lessons, earning his first pilot’s license at seventeen and his commercial license at eighteen. There he met his mentor, Gilbert Cargill, who guided him for decades into the world as the pilot he’d always dreamed of.
Against the odds, Frederick built a distinguished career with United Airlines—becoming part of the fewer than one percent of minority pilots. This is the story of a boy who dared to dream and the captain he became.
