About this item

Amazon.com It's a rare trick to uphold the sacred tenets of rock & roll while simultaneously reinventing them. But over the course of their 21 Singles, compiled here, the Jesus and Mary Chain did just that. When the first of them, "Upside Down," emerged on Creation in 1984, the template was set. The Reid brothers took the idea of sullen, black-leather-clad rebellion to a darker and more inhospitable place than anyone had before. Even now, the early Mary Chain singles sound astounding, the way pop and avant-garde elements are mangled together so beautifully. 21 Singles goes far beyond these, through another 14 years of protean glumness, patchy albums, and, fortunately, many excellent singles. For the Mary Chain's forte was the three-minute pop thrill, the precisely calibrated jukebox hit. An uncanny number of them--"Some Candy Talking," "Sidewalking," "Reverence"--remain among the very best of the 1980s and '90s. The Mary Chain's last two singles, from 1998, "I Hate Rock & Roll" and "I Love Rock & Roll," neatly close affairs: bitter and celebratory; consumed and confused by music and the impulse to make it, which has driven them for so long. This band was genius, and here's why. --John Mulvey Product Description Exploring a vein mined by their heroes The Velvet Underground and The Stooges, Glasgow, Scotland-based alt-rock cult heroes The Jesus And Mary Chain were the link between pure pop and white noise in the '80s-'90s. The band's half-dozen albums, nearly two dozen singles, and riot-inducing live shows (introduced to U.S. audiences via a spot on the '92 Lollapalooza tour) in turn were an inspiration to the next generation of subversives, from My Bloody Valentine to Dinosaur Jr. to The Chemical Brothers. The Jesus And Mary Chain were forged in 1984. Later that year, their seminal debut single "Upside Down" (on Creation) and early live shows made J&MC ovefnight sensations in the U.K. A year later, the band connected with Blanco Y Negro/Warner Bros. and issued the smash single "You Trip Me Up" and a superlative debut album, Psychocandy. J&MC followed with lots more sonic pop experiments on Darklands (1987), Automatic (1989), Honey's Dead (1992), Stoned & Dethroned (1994), and Munki (1998, on Sub Pop). In 1999, the Chain disbanded for good. Now Rhino presents the band's rock 'n' roll conspiracy by gathering their most subversive sides on the ultimate single-CD collection!
