About this item

Unique Elements Author Biography About A Vindication of the Rights of Woman “I love man as my fellow; but his sceptre real or usurped, extends not to me, unless the reason of an individual demands my homage; and even then the submission is to reason, and not to man.” A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, by 18th century British author Mary Wollstonecraft, is one of the earliest works of feminist philosophy. First published in 1792, it was an instant success. In Vindication, Wollstonecraft was responding to those educational and political theorists of the 18th century who disseminated the view that women should not receive a rational education. Wollstonecraft was in particular prompted to write the work after reading Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord's 1791 report to the French National Assembly, which stated that women should only receive a “domestic education”. Launching a far-reaching attack against sexual double standards, this classic work of early feminism remains as relevant today as it was when first published.
