Siegel

Product Description

A dynamic and innovative pianist, a compelling and original singer, and a creative and sophisticated composer and arranger, DeRose debuts on MAXJAZZ with A Walk In The Park. Her fifth release, A Walk In The Park is her much-anticipated and requested first trio recording . The trio here is first-rate: Martin Wind on bass and Matt Wilson on drums. All arrangements are by DeRose, who produced the CD and wrote three of the eleven tracks. DeRose selected little-known songs by Al Jolson and Duke Ellington in addition to well-known standards and - representative of her era – even an iconic song by John Lennon.

From the Artist

I didn’t listen to a lot of singers, so there wasn’t anybody I was trying to sing like. When I started to play piano again, I felt a difference in my playing right off the bat. Before it was just swing, swing, swing. But after learning lyrics and relating to them in a non-musical way, I realized I was phrasing my piano solos and the melody with the words in mind – the story and emotion of the song. It took everything to a deeper level of musicality.

About the Artist

DeRose began formal piano training at the age of three after her mother heard her pick out melodies on a toy chord organ. She studied classical music into high school but by 17, was so compelled by jazz that she would sneak out of Binghamton once or twice a week and drive four hours into New York City to hear idols like Hank Jones, Kenny Barron and Mulgrew Miller (now her labelmate) perform. By 1991, DeRose had moved to New York City to build her jazz career. She has performed with the Ray Brown Trio, the Clark Terry Quintet, Benny Golson, Ray Drummond, Bill Henderson, Houston Person, Lewis Nash and Ken Peplowski. Recently she opened for McCoy Tyner and almost stole the show. Her trio has been featured at the annual IAJE jazz industry conference (New York City), the Monterey Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, the San Francisco Jazz Festival, Jazz Standard, Yoshi’s, Jazz Alley, Sculler’s and the Blue Note to name a few. An experienced music educator, DeRose is a member of the faculty at the Stanford Jazz Workshop, Purchase College in New York and the Groningen Conservatory of Music in The Netherlands and was selected as a judge for the 2004 Thelonius Monk Competition in Washington, DC, at The Kennedy Center. Selected as "Talent Deserving Wider Recognition" in DOWNBEAT’s 2002 Critics Poll, DeRose has been featured in the NEW YORK TIMES, THE ADVOCATE, SINGER MAGAZINE and on NPR: "Piano Jazz with Marian McPartland;" "Morning Edition;" and on March 24, "Jazz Set with Dee Dee Bridgewater." Her self-produced debut recording as a leader, Introducing Dena DeRose, received rave reviews as did her three consecutive CDs, all on Sharp Nine Records: Another World; I Can See Clearly Now; and Love’s Holiday.
ASIN: B0007R8EDG
VSKU: DBV.B0007R8EDG.G
Condition: Good
Author/Artist:Dena DeRose
Binding: Audio cd
Note: Any images shown are stock photographs and product may differ from what is shown.
Condition Notes: Individually inspected: Guaranteed to play perfectly or your money back.
