Spanning a period of 12 years, this immensely engaging diary tells the tale of Jane Howison Beale. In her own words, Jane discusses daily life in Antebellum Fredericksburg, overcoming the death of her husband soon after the birth of their tenth child, and opening a school on her property to save her home and support her family. The diary also contains her family's heart wrenching and harrowing experiences during the Civil War, as she learns of the death of her son Charlie in battle and watches as the seat of war comes roaring into her backyard. Jane Beale's diary is one of the best chronicles of any community caught amidst war. She offers not just narration, but perception--an eyewitness account of a town that was transformed by war, physically, culturally, and socially. This new limited-edition volume was designed to emulate Jane's own diary, with a hard cover binding and a meticulously digitized facsimile of her signature on the cover-an exact replica of the original journal which is housed at the Fredericksburg Area Museum. The book includes color photographs, updated endnotes, and an Introduction by John Hennessy, Chief Historian of the Fredericksburg-Spotsylvania National Military Park.
