About this item

“And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.” Qu’ran 17:23Respecting one’s parents and fulfilling their rights is a universal teaching that is common to all faiths and cultures. However modern living has distanced people from their traditional social structures. Once rooted in healthy tradition, social bonds are steadily weakening, and parental disrespect, a symptom of that decay, is ever present. The Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said that at the end of times, “There will be much disrespect towards parents.” Whatever the larger trend, the teachings of Islam can help return the parent-child relationship to its proper balance. This course covers the book “Rights of Parents” by Shaykh Muhammad Mawlud, which is concise, practical and applicable to our modern lifestyles. Respecting and caring for one’s parents (birr al-walidayn) is one of the foundational aspects of human society that all major religions and cultures teach. The lessons of birr al walidayn have been reaffirmed and clarified by the Book of Allah and the teachings of the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam). Rather than merely stating the general principle of birr, the lessons of Islam have provided amazingly detailed lessons and rules for how to interact with parents in all aspects of our lives. The student will learn how to implement the “Five Rulings” of Shariah in respect to the Rights of Parents. They will learn when obeying one’s parents is obligatory, recommended, permissible, disliked and prohibited. The course will also provide an explanation of all the verses and major hadith that pertain to the Rights of Parents. For all those who seek to draw spiritually closer to Allah, learning and implementing this knowledge of how to interact with parents is essential.
