Alone in the wilderness, they look like the last people on Earth. Nanook and Sedna's traditional way of life starts changing slowly, but inevitably. Hunting becomes more and more difficult, the animals around them die from inexplicable causes, and the ice has been melting earlier every year. Chena, who visits them regularly, is their only connection to the outside world and to their daughter Ága, who left the icy tundra long ago due to a family feud. When Sedna's health deteriorates, Nanook decides to fulfil her wish. He embarks on a long journey in order to find Ága.\n\nReview\n\nA small gem of focused filmmaking, 'Ága' tells a minimal story so beautifully it holds us completely. Directed with great skill by Bulgaria's Milko Lazarov and stunningly photographed by Kaloyan Bozhilov, 'Ága' plays for all we can see like a classic ethnographic documentary set in the Siberian far north of Russia's Sakha republic. But though the characters speak the local Yakut language, what this film turns out to be is a carefully constructed parable that draws us into a made-up life as if it was the real thing. What is real are the stunning vistas of winter in this dauntingly frigid part of the world, a frozen vastness that is mesmerizing and poetic in its almost complete emptiness... No matter what its origin, the unforgettable thing about 'Ága' is the way its beautifully shot and impeccably composed images hold us, both the epic outdoor shots and the warm intimate moments inside. Quiet and unobtrusive, this is a film that knows how to make an impression, and it does. --Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times\n\nDirector Milko Lazarov and his cinematographer Kaloyan Bozhilov never cease to amaze. --Screen Daily\n\nA winning combination of the cosily intimate and the sublimely epic. --The Hollywood Reporter\n\nAbout the Actor\n\nMIKHAIL APROSIMOV was born in 1950.
