The second season's story arc also gave promise for a greater degree of action and suspense following the revelation of the Alphas' existence by Dr. Rosen (David Strathairn) at the conclusion of season one, which in turn ratchets up renegade Alpha Stanton Parish's campaign to wage war with humanity. New characters with great potential are also introduced (or brought back for more screen time), most notably Summer Glau's tech savant and Sean Astin as a sort of human recording device. And again, what drew a following to Alphas remains the carefully crafted characters, from Ryan Cartwright's autistic with extraordinary information-processing capabilities to Laura Mennell's Nina, who struggles this season with her power to coerce individuals by her force of will. Performances also remain strong, with the always capable Strathairn anchoring his cast of Alphas; unfortunately, their good efforts, along with those of series creators Zak Penn and Michael Karnow and their talented production team, couldn't generate a third season for the show, leaving the fate of the Alphas--and the world at large--in the lurch. As it stands, their two complete seasons remain an engaging and entertaining effort. The three-disc season-two set is rounded out by a gallery of deleted scenes and a gag reel. --Paul Gaita
