Ms. McPartland began to teach herself Chopin waltzes by ear when she was only three years old. Later she pursued classical training at the Guildhall School of Music in London. She traveled throughout Europe during World War II, entertaining the Allied troops. While in France, she encountered and began to play with her future husband,famed Chicago cornetist Jimmy McPartland. In the United States after the war, Ms.McPartland heard the call of bebop and began to pursue other musical directions. She formed her own jazz trio and landed a two week stint at the renowned Hickory House in New York City.
