This set should enhance his reputation, for it's beautifully played and interpretively convincing, though Schepkin's modern Steinway will annoy period-instrument fans, as will his expressive style. His Bach is rhythmically alive, wonderfully articulated, and tonally resplendent. Preludes are infused with feeling, but melodies sing freely. Fugues are well balanced, inner voices exploited even as main subjects are given their full due. The wealth of detail recalls Glenn Gould without his mannerisms; the overall approach is reminiscent of the Russian school of Feinberg and Richter without their hints of romantic excess. Well recorded, too, this is among the best accounts of an endlessly fascinating work. --Dan Davis\n\nProduct Description\n\nTRACK LISTING Johann Sebastian Bach The Well Tempered Clavier, Book I CD 1 1-2 Prelude I\/Fugue I (4-part) in C Major, BWV 846 3-4 Prelude II\/Fugue II (3-part) in C Minor, BWV 847 5-6 Prelude III\/Fugue III (3-part) in C-sharp Major, BWV 848 7-8 Prelude IV\/Fugue IV (5-part) in C-sharp Minor, BWV 849 9-10 Prelude V\/Fugue V (4-part) in D Major, BWV 850 11-12 Prelude VI\/Fugue VI (3-part) in D Minor, BWV 851 13-14 Prelude VII\/Fugue VII (3-part) in E-flat Major, BWV 852 15-16 Prelude VIII in E-flat Minor\/ Fugue VIII (3-part) in D-sharp Minor, BWV 853 17-18 Prelude IX\/Fugue IX (3-part) in E Major, BWV 854 19-20 Prelude X\/Fugue X (2-part) in E Minor, BWV 855 21-22 Prelude XI\/Fugue XI (3-part) in F Major, BWV 856 23-24 Prelude XII\/Fugue XII (4-part) in F Minor, BWV 857 CD 2 1-2 Prelude XIII\/Fugue XIII (3-part) in F-sharp Major, BWV 858 3-4 Prelude XIV\/Fugue XIV (5-part) in F-sharp Minor, BWV 859 5-6 Prelude XV\/Fugue XV (3-part) in G Major, BWV 860 7-8 Prelude XVI\/Fugue XVI (4-part) in G Minor, BWV 861 9-10 Prelude XVII\/Fugue XVII (4-part) in A-flat Major, BWV 862 11-12 Prelude XVIII\/Fugue XVIII (4-part) in G-sharp Minor, BWV 863 13-14 Prelude XIX\/Fugue XIX (3-part) in A Major, BWV 864 15-16 Prelude XX\/Fugue XX (4-part) in A Minor, BWV 865 17-18 Prelude XXI\/Fugue XXI (3-part) in B-flat Major, BWV 866 19-20 Prelude XXII\/Fugue XXII (5-part) in B-flat Minor, BWV 867 21-22 Prelude XXIII\/Fugue XXIII (4-part) in B Major, BWV 868 23-24 Prelude XXIV\/Fugue XXIV (4-part) in B Minor, BWV 869 SERGEY SCHEPKIN The Russian-American pianist Sergey Schepkin has performed, to great acclaim, in many countries of the world in such venues and on such series as Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Great Performers Series at Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Bank of America Celebrity Series in Boston, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, the LACMA and Maestro Series in Los Angeles, the Grand Philharmonic Hall in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Sumida Triphony Hall in Tokyo, among many others.
