Fast becoming one of smooth jazz's hookiest songwriters, saxophonist Steve Cole scored two No. 1 radio hits off his 1998 debut Stay Awhile. No doubt many program directors will continue to favor those tunes, but hopefully it won't be at the expense of the superbly crafted tracks on Cole's follow-up disc, Between Us.
Cole has the notion of "quick verse, get to the brassy hook" down to such a science that it may take a few listens to realize that the opening two tracks, "Got It Goin' On" and "From the Start," are two different songs. On both, producer Brian Culbertson sandwiches simmering, retro keyboards and silky, laid-back tenor lines between perfectly textured choruses that layer multiple alto-sax tracks atop a single tenor track.
Utilizing various rhythms on Between Us, Cole sticks with this basic approach of holding back on the verses, then amplifying the choruses with brass. On a slow cover of TLC's "Waterfalls," he and Culbertson take a variation of this technique to new and exciting levels, accenting a horn-driven lead melody with a multi-horn harmony section. Every few beats, Cole jumps out of the mix with cool improvs on tenor sax.
