About this item

Blazing New Homeschool Trails: Educating and Launching Teens with Developmental Disabilities Natalie Vecchione (NC) and Cindy LaJoy (CO) are both homeschool moms. Years ago, Natalie and Cindy realized their teens (with developmental disabilities) needed an alternative homeschool, high school path in order for their teens to have a meaningful future. Natalie and Cindy, within their respective families, each battled confusion, isolation, and uncertainty. However, they turned their desperation into inspiration! Through entrepreneurship and apprenticeship, these experienced homeschool moms prepared their teens with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) to move forward with confidence, hope and a set of practical life and job skills. Natalie and Cindy have now joined together to write the book that theywish they had read to guide them during those frightening and lonely moments that came more often as their teens approached young adulthood. If you are parenting / homeschooling a child or teen who has a neurodiversity and you have asked yourself the following questions: “How can I help my teen focus on their strengths or unique gifts? What will the future look like for my neurodiverse teen after homeschool / high school? How do we step out-of-the-box and blaze our own new trails?”…thenthis is the guidebook for you! About the authors - Natalie Vecchione is the co-founder of FASD Hope. She is also the producer and host of the FASD Hope weekly podcast series. FASD Hope's mission is to provide awareness, information and inspiration for people whose lives have been touched by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). She is a FASD parent advocate, special needs homeschool parent mentor and peer support mentor. Natalie is certified in Mental Health First Aid and she has participated in several trainings about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). In 2019, she was honored to be chosen as one of fifty parents in the state of North Carolina to participate in the first ECAC (Exceptional Children’s Assistance Center) Parent Leadership Summit. Natalie is blessed to have reinvented her career into a calling to help those parents, families and loved ones whose lives have been touched by FASD. Cindy LaJoy is the founder of Blue Collar Homeschool, an 11,000+ member Facebook and website. On a daily basis, Cindy guides thousands of homeschoolers, whose children are seeking alternative paths in their homeschool journeys. She works as a special needs academic educator, advisor and consultant. Cindy’s biggest venture, to date, was the development of Buckaroos Slices and Scoops, a pizza and ice cream business now operated by her three young adults living with FASD. Buckaroos is now a successful, small business which her kids developed, built out and run by themselves. Buckaroos not only provides employment for her three kids with an FASD, but intentionally hires a staff who may need more support.
