From the Publisher: This classic vampire novel, Carmilla, by J. Sheridan Le Fanu, has profoundly impacted literature during the author's lifetime and the years following his death. Published in 1872, this gothic treasure introduced the world to the concept of the female vampire and explored themes of sexuality, desire, and the supernatural in an unprecedented way. Carmilla is remarkable because it subverts traditional gender roles and expectations. In a time when women were often portrayed as passive and submissive, Carmilla is a powerful and seductive figure who takes control of her desires and her destiny. The novel's exploration of same-sex attraction and the blurring of gender boundaries was a radical departure from Victorian society's norms. Carmilla's influence extends far beyond its own time. The novel has inspired countless adaptations and interpretations, from films and television shows to comic books and video games. Its themes of forbidden desire, the mysterious allure of the unknown, and the blurring of the lines between good and evil resonate with audiences today. Carmillais the first publication in theQueer Classics Series. We aim to create quality, affordable, and accessible classics for the LGBTQ+ community, its allies, and other interested readers.
