About this item

Product Description Catherine Russell is that rarest of entities - an honest-to-goodness, genuine jazz singer. In a field where any vocalist who attempts the classic canon is granted that sobriquet as a matter of course, she stands out like a diamond among rhinestones. Ms. Russell’s voice is full-blown femininity incarnate, a dusky, stalwart and soulful instrument that radiates interpretive power yet remains touchingly vulnerable. Her phrasing is pristine and miraculously free of the slithery hailstorms of notes so commonly employed as camouflage by lesser talents. She launches fearlessly into each tune straight from the "and-one," getting inside the melody and capturing every emotion -- and the lady can swing! Whether she’s shimmying amid a barrel-house stomper, channeling fifties R&B, dragging her weary heart through a torchy juke-house number or kicking up her heels honky-tonk style, the lady can stand comparison with her greatest forebears. Review " . . . a wonderfully eclectic set of tunes including "Back O Town Blues" which her dad Luis Russell wrote with Louis Armstrong." -- Lee Hildebrand, San Francisco Bay Guardian (Best of 2006) "... it's a delight to hear the real thing in Catherine Russell. . ." -- Nat Hentoff, Wall Street Journal "She has an infectiousness that not only spurs the band on but also grabs the listener by the ear." -- Jazz Week Magazine, April 10, 2006 "She is a fesh and original voice. Cat is the most exciting debut album I've heard in a long time." -- Will Friedwald, New York Sun "This is one album that raises the standard for standards !" -- Johnny Meister, WXPN-FM . . ." Incredibly Talented and Classy. . . " -- Village Voice Russell's inclusive nature and sheer talent places her in the elite of new songstresses like Madeleine Peroux, & Norah Jones. -- Steve Futterman, Barnes & Noble, com About the Artist Catherine Russell was literally born into jazz -- her late father, Luis Russell, was a bandleader, pianist and Louis Armstrong’s longtime musical director. Ms. Russell’s mother, Carline Ray, is a bassist and vocalist who has performed with Mary Lou Williams and Wynton Marsalis. Born in New York City, Ms. Russell attended the High School of Music and Art and later graduated with honors from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. A singer and multi-instrumentalist (she plays percussion, mandolin, guitar, and keyboards), Ms. Russell has performed with Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, Joan Osborne, David Bowie, Jackson Browne, Rosanne Cash, Boz Skaggs, Al Green, and Dolly Parton, among others. She also toured the world with a gospel group and appeared at the Charlie Parker Festival and George Wein’s JVC Festival. Ms. Russell has participated in several gold-and-platinum-selling recordings. In addition to fronting her own band, she sings with a group led by! legendary bassist Earl May, whose past affiliations include Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, and John Coltrane.
