About this item

Review Cutter Rescues takes viewers through dramatic rescues made by those two familiar Lake Superior cutters as well as the original Escanaba, lost during World War II, and the Hollyhock... Particularly compelling are the stories of those connected to the rescue of the foreign vessel, Nordmeer, on northern Lake Huron- a combination Coast Guard effort between the Mackinaw and a helicopter crew. This chapter features footage of the sailors on the Nordmeer, interviews with the pilot of the helicopter and crew members of the Mackinaw. The interviews with crews both in its (Sundew) past career and at the end of its active service will interigue and touch local maritime buffs. --Lake Superior Magazine Feb-March 2007 Ric Mixter s latest DVD examines the careers of four U.S. Coast Guard icebreakers- Escanaba (WPG-77), Hollyhock (WAGL 220), Sundew (WLB 404), and Mackinaw (WAGB 83). Those familiar with Mixter s productions know his work is first class, and Cutter Rescues continues the tradition, presenting fascinating historic images of all four vessels. Particularly gripping is live footage of the Escanaba s involvement in the rescue of the whaleback Henry Cort, sunk at Muskegon in 1934. Cutter Rescues interviews the men who served aboard and those whose lives were touched by the ships. The segment on the Escanaba documents her Great Lakes service and her work during World War II on saltwater, where she was ultimately lost. Known for her quick rescue of the Prins Willem V s crew when that saltie sank off Milwaukee in the 1950s, the Hollyhock was part of the rescue operation the night the Carl D. Bradley sank. A Hollyhock crewmember recalls that event, along with video of the Hollyhock today- at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. The Sundew aided the Bradley rescue also depicted here, and Mixter boards the vessel to document her last spring breakout at Duluth, before becoming a museum. Finally, Cutter Rescues documents, in detail, the building, launch and career of the Mighty Mackinaw, and offers rare footage taken during the rescue of survivors from the Cedarville and Nordmeer shipwrecks. This DVD is, in a word-outstanding. --Great Laker Magazine Cutter Rescues depicts four great ships and highlights the life of each in classic style. Mixter's documentary will be an excellent addition to everyone's video library. --Lakeshore Guardian
