The complications continue to multiply as the macabre fantasy Death Note builds to its conclusion. The two-man intellectual duel between Light Yagami and the detective known only as "L" has turned into a hexagon of interlocking relationships. The spooky orphans Mello and Near compete to identify and capture the murderer Kira. Light takes the scatter-brained Misa's Death Note and gives it to Teru Mikawa, a disciple of Kira's who's eager to "delete" everyone he dislikes. Adding to the confusion is the appearance of television personality Demegawa who declares himself "The Voice of Kira." After Mikawa kills Demegawa, Light decides that a woman he dated in college who's become prominent newcaster could be useful as the new "The Voice of Kira." The increasingly baroque complications lend credence to the dictum, "Less is more." The battle between Light and L felt more intense and more satisfying than these splintered sub-plots.
