About this item
A heartwarming tribute to America's search and rescue dogs. World Trade Center Pentagon Flight 93 Therapy dogs K2 canines (IED Detection) Tributes to those who have passed 400 color photographs, many never seen before
Dog Heroes of September 11th: A Tribute to America's Search and Rescue Dogs, now in its Tenth Anniversary edition, documents the historical and noble efforts of our canine patriots, the search and rescue dogs.
This book was the first major publication to salute the canines that served our nation in the recovery missions following the terrorist strikes on America on 9/11. In his foreword to this edition, former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani says, "No American could be unmoved by the stories and images of these dogs and their handlers...Their journeys, as told in these pages, reinforce our resolve to persevere, rebuild and keep our nation safe and strong."
A testament to man's best friend and his most critical role in American history, Dog Heroes of September 11th profiles 80 canine heroes and their handlers, retelling their heart-stirring stories and capturing many defining moments of the days that followed September 11, 2001. Dogs on every front of disaster are recognized, from 9/11 and K2 military working dogs to the U.S. Haiti disaster response and 10 featured therapy dogs who offered comfort after the September 11th crisis.
This oversized coffee table book, a perfect gift for dog lovers, features over 400 color photographs, many never seen except in this publication. Author Nona Kilgore Bauer, who has won multiple awards for her books on dogs, personally interviewed each of the handlers who participated in the recovery efforts at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, Shanksville, Pennsylvania (Flight 93), and the Fresh Kills landfill—the site to which remains from the fallen towers were transported—and lovingly recounts their moving experiences of heroism and bravery.
In its first edition, released in 2006 to mark the fifth anniversary of the terrorists' attacks on America, Dog Heroes of September 11th won numerous awards, including "book of the year" from the Dog Writers Association of America, Book-of-the-Month Club, and the Independent Book Publishers Association. Due to the popularity of and critical acclaim for the first edition, this commemorative tenth-anniversary volume reaffirms the publisher's commitment to the important work of the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF), which grants its official endorsement to this publication.
The second edition, revised and expanded with over 100 new pages and including 150 new full-color photographs, presents chapters on military working dogs in Iraq and Afghanistan, the therapy dogs who worked at Ground Zero, the SDF's new National Training Center, and post-9/11 rescue missions at home and abroad. A special section, written by selected 9/11 SAR handlers, pays tribute to their canine partners who have passed away since their recovery missions.
You'll also find features on DOGNY, the American Kennel Club's salute to search and rescue dogs; the canine disaster search teams deployed with FEMA task forces after the magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010; portraits of K2 military working dogs; and an exploration of veterinary care for our canine heroes. Understand what it is disaster search and rescue dogs do, the training that allows them to search mountains of rubble for survivors, and the powerful connection between Marines and their K2 dogs. As Bobby George says, "The Marines tell us they would rather walk with their dogs than with all of the other sophisticated equipment out there."
In addition to paying tribute to the dog-and-handler teams that were deployed after the attacks, this book supports the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF) in its mission to produce certified search and rescue teams to protect our whole nation. As with the first edition, a portion of the proceeds of Dog Heroes of September 11th benefits the SDF, helping to further their vital work in protecting and preserving our nation through the training and deployment of search and rescue dogs.
These are the dogs of war, heroic canines who served their country, and the poignancy of their stories will bring both smiles and tears to every American. Dog Heroes of September 11th is a vital addition to any library of books concerning 9/11.
"In the ten years since 9/11, we have seen dogs and people sacrifice so much in the name of our freedom and safety. Reflecting on the heroism of America's search and rescue dogs and handlers then and now, Dog Heroes of September 11th is an extraordinary commemorative volume of a time America will never forget."
—Dennis B. Sprung, president and CEO, American Kennel Club
"If you deem yourself a dog lover, get ready to love them even more. A book full of courage, dedication, hope and faith—not just in mankind, but in mankind's best friend."
