Throughout the 1980s, Miami was at the center of a racial and cultural shift taking place throughout the country, and the University of Miami football team served as a microcosm for this evolution. A predominantly white university, the school’s image was forever changed when coach Howard Schnellenberger scoured some of the toughest ghettos in Florida to recruit mostly black players for his team. With a newly branded swagger, inspired and fueled by the quickly growing local Miami hip hop culture, these Canes’ took on larger-than-life personalities and won four national titles between 1983 and 1991. Filmmaker Billy Corben, a Miami native and University of Miami alum, tells the story of how these “Bad Boys” of football changed the attitude of the game they played, and how this serene campus was transformed into “The U.” Disc 1: Main Feature Bonus Features Including: Deleted Scenes, Director Statements and much more! Disc 2: 4 Condensed Games (each approximately 20 – 30 min) Miami @ Duke (10/01/1983) / Score: 56-17 - The eventual national champions buried the Duke Blue Devils in this mid-season game. South Carolina @ Miami (12/05/1987) / Score: 20-16 - Led by WR Michael Irvin and QB Steve Walsh, the Hurricanes defeated South Carolina at home and eventually went on to an undefeated season. Miami vs Alabama (01/01/1990) / 1990 Sugar Bowl / Score: 33 – 25 - The Miami Hurricanes clinched the national championship with a 33-25 victory over seventh-ranked Alabama in what was the highest scoring game at the time in the Bowl’s history. Miami vs. Florida State (11/16/1991) / Score: 17-16 - Wide Right I. One of the most significant games in the storied Miami – Florida State Rivalry, the game ended in dramatic fashion, with Florida State kicker Gerry Thomas missing a 34-yard potential game winning field goal wide to the right.
