Note the amusing role reversal on the tag of the classic Ellington standard, Dont Get Around Much Anymore, which also features Rod Fleemans sparkling guitar; the heart wrenching, incredibly haunting Jobim/Buarque composition Retrato em Branco e Preto, featuring the sensual accompaniment of the Latin jazz ensemble Musa Nova; and, the marvelous Bobby Troup blues tune, Baby, Baby, All The Time, showcasing Cartwrights dynamic piano and Stan Kesslers lively horn arrangement. Also enjoyable on this selection is the whimsical trombones intro to the scat solo. This intro is reminiscent of earlier times when the trombone was my instrument of choice. On her second solo issue, she's pure velvet on "Something Cool" and "Love For Sale," delightfully whimsical on Dave Frishberg's "Peel Me A Grape," and vividly intense on Dori Caymmi's "Obsession" and Sergio Mendes' "So Many Stars." She also wrote the title track and sings Jobim's "Retrato Em Branco E Preto (Portrait in Black and White)," in Portuguese. "By dint of hard work and obviously innate musicality, Angela has established herself as one of the areas top jazz singers," says Dr. Chuck Berg, writer for JazzTimes. Hagenbach is a storyteller par excellence whose winning style evokes influences ranging from Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald to Julie London and Shirley Horn. Her 1994 debut CD "Come Fly With Me " released on, her own label Amazon Records, and has been praised by critics as "an album of considerable weight, showcasing talent definitely deserving wider recognition and exposure." What a singer is able to take from her life experiences, and express in her music has often been a key to her success. Hagenbach is no exception. As a native of Kansas City, she grew up in a musical family. Her father was a professional saxophonist, who performed regularly in the 18th and Vine club district during Kansas Citys jazz heyday, and her mother was a pianist. As the seventh of eight children, she was encouraged to play an instrument of her choice, the trombone, which she played for seven years. Although she always had a desire to perform, it was a modeling career that first propelled her into the spotlight. Her career spanned fifteen years and was spent between New York and Europe, where she developed the professionalism that now help make her performances so compelling. Hagenbach began to study jazz and eventually launched her solo career in 1990 with an extended engagement at Kansas Citys Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Since that time, she performs regionally and works regularly in every major Jazz Club in the metropolitan area and a host of Jazz Festivals in the Midwest. In the process shes released the 1995 recording, "Angela Hagenbach and Musa Nova". Hagenbach possesses a rich contralto voice and an intuitive phrasing understanding of Latin music. She can deliver a song in Portuguese as if she had spoken the language all her life. She also plays a variety of Latin percussion instruments, which perfectly compliments the soulful, sultry sound of Musa Nova. In December 1996, Hagenbach released her second solo recording which features one of her original compositions, "Feel the Magic". Calvin Wilson, music critic for the Kansas City Star writes, " Feel the Magic is jazz singing as it ought to be. Ripe with attitude and a full spectrum of jazz selections, Angela Hagenbachs unique style emerges." In 1998, Ms. Hagenbach along with pianist, Joe Cartwright, completed a six-country tour of Africa as Jazz Ambassadors for the United States Information Agency in cooperation with the Kennedy Center. With her auspicious singer/songwriter career, and a demanding schedule of concerts, club dates and workshops, Hagenbach notes "Theres nothing quite as intoxicating as the special vibration between performer and audience."
