About this item

Product Description There have been countless Gales since man first ventured onto the Great Lakes. These are the worst: The 1913 Storms. Wheelsman Ed Kanaby was the last man to see several of the ships lost to the 1913 Storm including the Regina, Price, Wexford and Isaac M Scott. Hear how he saved his crew in this exclusive television interview, and dive in to see what the ships look like today. The 1905 Gales: Lake Superior's worst shipping season ended in 1905, after killer storms stole nearly 100 lives and over a dozen ships. Hear the stories of the Sevona, Pretoria, Lafayette and Madeira and see the chilling photographs documenting the rescue of the crew from the Mataafa. The Armistice Day Storm: Lake Michigan's worst storm tore through at 126 miles per hour, sinking three freighters and beaching a half dozen others. Over 60 sailors would never return home after the tempest, but 17 lives were spared thanks to three local fishermen. Black Friday: Journey aboard the whaleback steamer Colgate as it sails into Lake Erie's fury. Four ships were sunk, but the storm spared three captains. Visit the untimely destinations of the Merida, Colgate and Marshall F Butters, lost on their final run in 1916. Featuring music by Dan Hall. Hosted by Ric Mixter. With DVD extras including interactive wrecksites of the Wexford, Pretoria and Merida. Also a bonus video of the history of whaleback freighters. Review Ric Mixter deserves great credit for his work tracking and interviewing the actual participants in these adventures, some of whom are the sole survivors and, therefore, the only remaining eye witnesses to this maritime history. --Lake Superior Magazine Feb-March 2007
