Charles Philip Pahinui(Gabby) was born in Honolulu in 1921. In the 1930s, Gabby taught himself to play the Hawaiian steel guitar, bass and guitar. He became one of the most sought-after back-up players in the Honolulu music scene. Gabby's guttural falsetto and growing reputation for steel and slack-key guitar artistry found him in company with literally every important musician of the day, Alvin Isaacs, George Kainapau, Tommy Castro, Gigi Royce, Tommy Carter, Honolulu was alive with their music. In the 1950s one of the brightest stars was falsetto vocalist Andy Cummings, host of the city's most popular radio show, and a respected Hawaiian performer. Gabby joined Andy as a steel guitarist and singer in an affiliation that lasted nearly eighteen years. Holding a full-time job at the City & County of Honolulu, Gabby somehow managed to provide support for his growing family of thirteen children. Though often too tired to play his guitar, his reputation continued to spread. Appearing with a variety of groups over the years, Gabby became widely acclaimed for this superb guitar work and distinctive vocals. In the 1960s Gabby became part of a band known as the "Sons of Hawaii". The group featured Gabby on slack-key guitar and vocals, other members were ukulele virtuoso Eddie Kamae, bassist Joe Marshall, and steel guitar master David "Feet" Rogers. The "Sons of Hawaii" were musically way ahead of their time and enjoyed a tremendous popularity. In 1972, Gabby asked his own sons to join him to create the album known as "Gabby". The album was hugely successful in Hawaii and fueled the Hawaiian Renaissance that was occurring at that time.
ASIN: B000008NUP
VSKU: DBV.B000008NUP.G
Condition: Good
Author/Artist:PAHINUI|GABBY
Binding: Audio CD
Note: Any images shown are stock photographs and product may differ from what is shown.
Condition Notes: Individually inspected: Guaranteed to play perfectly or your money back.
