{"product_id":"growling-old-men","title":"Growling Old Men","description":"About the Artist\n\nThe Growling Old Men are Ben Winship (mandolin \u0026amp; vocals)and John Lowell(guitar \u0026amp; vocals) - both veterans of the Northern Rockies acoustic music world. Together for the first time, the duo presents a tight yet relaxed set of original and traditional bluegrass songs, ballads and tunes. The CD is truly a joint effort with the lead singing, songwriting and picking duties shared throughout. Influenced equally by the music of the Appalachian hills and the western plains, this offering is at once simple and powerful. Furthermore, it reflects the genuine sense of fun these two guys get from playing together.\nIn the words of Tim O'Brien, \"Ben is one of the acoustic music scene's best writers.\" A multi-instrumentalist, Winship was a founding member of Loose Ties, with whom he performed from 1986 to 1996. At present he plays bass with the nationally touring Judith Edelman Band. In addition to his recordings with these groups, Ben has two solo records to his credit. His most recent, One Shoe Left, received rave reviews from sources as diverse as the Boston Globe, Bluegrass Unlimited, and the Grateful Dead's Relix Magazine - a testament to Winship's versatility and broad appeal.\nLowell has been a stalwart of the Montana bluegrass scene for the past 15 years. Fronting two of the region's finest bluegrass bands, Wheel Hoss (1987-1984), and currently Deep River, John has set a standard for rock solid guitar playing and great singing. \"John Lowell is an engaging vocalist and a facile guitarist,\" said Bluegrass Unlimited, adding that, \"he is a great storyteller.\" Of late, John's songs have been showing up on the bluegrass radio charts and a growing list of contemporary bands (Front Range, New Vintage, Bluegrass Etc.)have been recording his work.\nThe CD was recorded live over the course of two weekends at Winship's home studio, employing the finest Neumann microphones and a minimum of extraneous technology. Matt Flinner added rhythm guitar to several cuts. The project was then expertly mixed by Charles Sawtelle, and mastered by David Glasser.
