hvorostovsky-romances
Hvorostovsky: Romances
Product Description

For his first CD release on Ondine, star baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky has chosen art song repertoire of great intensity and emotion from his Russian home country: 26 featured romances by Sergei Rachmaninov include such popular songs as Spring waters, Op. 14/11 or In the silence of the mysterious night, Op. 4/3. Together with his longstanding duo partner, Estonian pianist Ivari Ilja, they have frequently performed many of these songs to great critical acclaim ('Mr. Hvorostovsky used the infinite shadings of his luxuriously dark and dusky voice to illuminate the yearning nuances of bitterness and regret. [...] his admirable range of expressive and dynamic shadings [was] aptly mirrored by Ivari Ilja, an exemplary accompanist'. - The New York Times).

Review

Mr. Hvorostovsky sings magisterially in all these songs: the melancholic 'My Otdokhnjom' ('We Shall Rest'), with its slinking piano harmonies and urgent vocal lines; 'Vesennije Vody' ('Spring Waters'), all rhapsodic bursts of melody and rustling piano; the subdued yet wrenching 'Vsjo Otnjal u Menja' ('Everything I Had'). And his trademark ability to deliver long phrases seamlessly is put to good service in Rachmaninoff. --New York Times, Anthony Tommasini

The name Rachmaninov conjures up colossal piano concertos and sweeping symphonies. But the composer also wrote songs more than 80 of them, all but handful of which go unheard today. Velvet-voiced Siberian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky sings 26 Rachmaninov songs on his new album. 'In My Soul' finds the protagonist yearning to melt the icy heart of his beloved with the burning passion inside him. I love the slightly exotic coloring Rachmaninov gives the song, which plays perfectly through Hvorostovsky's plush, dark voice. --NPR Deceptive Cadence
ASIN: B006CAXQ6M
VSKU: DBV.B006CAXQ6M.A
Condition: Acceptable
Author/Artist:Sergei Rachmaninov|Sergey Rachmaninov|Dmitri Hvorostovsky|Ivari Ilja
Binding: Audio cd
Note: Any images shown are stock photographs and product may differ from what is shown.
Condition Notes: Individually inspected: Guaranteed to play perfectly or your money back.
