Carrey seems miscast; his humor tends toward confrontation, and he lacks the seductive charm that Russell's con games would seem to need (McGregor, who is charm embodied, might have been a better choice). But some of Russell's prison escapes are truly flabbergasting and it's refreshing to see a movie with gay characters that isn't about them wrestling with their sexual identities. The flow of the story feels much like a Coen Bros. movie (Fargo or Raising Arizona) with its vivid, quirky characters and unpredictable plot.
