Jazz Icons: Erroll Garner presents two beautifully filmed concerts from 1963 and 1964 featuring his classic trio of bassist Eddie Calhoun and drummer Kelly Martin. Erroll Garner was one of jazz's true original players and this DVD showcases his improvisational brilliance on a parade of his most classic numbers. The trio delivers throughout both shows including favorites 'Fly Me To The Moon' and 'I Get A Kick Out Of You' as well as originals 'Erroll's Theme,' 'Mambo Erroll' and his best-known composition, 'Misty.'
The release of the fourth installment of the Jazz Icons series now brings it up to 30 separate DVDs and over 40 hours of vintage jazz performances, making this the most comprehensive music DVD series of any genre. Reelin' In The Years who produced the Jazz Icons series are also responsible for the Grammy-nominated American Folk Blues Festival series, the multi-platinum selling Definitive Motown series (Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles) and the British Invasion series (Small Faces, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Dusty Springfield, and Herman's Hermits.) Review
Both shows are replete with Garner's famous bait-and-switch trick with tempos: 'It Might as Well Be Spring' and 'When Your Lover Has Gone,' both normally slow love songs, here become rollicking and strident, while 'Fly Me to the Moon,' usually heard as an uptempo swinger, shows Garner at his most tender and introspective.
