More or less serving as the final chapter to the previously released King Kong - Peter Jackson's Production Diaries, the post-production diaries includes everything you'd want to know about the post-production process, from sound mixing to editing to computer effects to cutting the trailer to.... It's three hours of pure Kong pleasure for hard-core fans; for everyone else, it might be a bit of a long haul. Fortunately, you can skip around depending on your interest, if you just want to know about the scoring of the movie, or get a feel for what it's like to be an extra on the steamship Venture (it involves a lot of waiting). Everyone, however, should make a stop whenever they see Andy Serkis -- in addition to being one of the most personable presences in these diaries, originally created for fansite Kong Is King, the sequences devoted to the computer re-creation of Kong himself are the most fascinating, with one technician stating it was harder to create Kong than Gollum (you'll have to have back-to-back screenings of this and the Lord of the Rings extras to decide for yourself). Through it all, Jackson is an amiable host, and you get the feeling despite the ton of work, it's actually fun to work for this guy. The rest of the extras, though, will leave you definitely wondering: is that all there is? Skip past the commercial for the Volkswagen Touareg, and make a stop at "Kong's New York" only if you need a remedial history of the city circa 1933. A bit of fun is had, though, with "Skull Island: A Natural History," which gives a great backstory to the creatures of the legendary island, and is filmed as a true-story documentary of the kind you might see on The History Channel -- hardcore Jackson fans will recognize the sly approach used in the director's hidden gem Forgotten Silver. Still, you can't help but wonder if there's yet another extras-laden DVD down the road, which even Jackson himself hints at. For now, though, this DVD gives you enough to chew on until that (hopefully) appears. --Mark Englehart
ASIN: B000E97Y6K
VSKU: 4EKGRJ007Z0B_ns
Condition: Acceptable
Binding: DVD
Note: Any images shown are stock photographs and product may differ from what is shown.
Condition Notes: Individually inspected: Guaranteed to play perfectly or your money back.
