Amazon.com Set in a West Yorkshire village filled with tweed-clad eccentrics, the world's longest-running sitcom is one of the quirkier items to emerge from the United Kingdom. Three cap-sporting pensioners form the center of the BBC mainstay (which also found favor on PBS): boorish Foggy (Brian Wilde), childlike Compo (Bill Owen), and gentle Clegg (Peter Sallis, voice of Wallace and Gromit's human half). Their pal, Howard (Robert Fyfe), who is constantly looking for ways to hide his mistress, Marina (Jean Fergusson), from his wife, Pearl (Juliette Kaplan), also figures into the scenario. While the men wander about town getting into trouble, the more responsible womenfolk, like teashop proprietor Ivy (Jane Freeman) and antique-store owner Auntie Wainwright (Jean Alexander), hold down the fort at home and at work where they drink tea and kvetch about the men. As Nora Batty (Kathy Staff), who spends much of her time in curlers, puts it, "They're not meant for indoors. They can't sit still in a chair. They're not really compatible with furniture." This two-disc set features eight episodes, including the special "The Man Who Nearly Knew Pavarotti," in which the gents take possession of a jumble-shop piano in order to help aspiring musician Billy (Norman Wisdom) live out his dream of performing in front of a live audience. Other adventures revolve around air raid sirens, a mysterious motorcyclist, an amateur astronaut, and a lost old lady. Though Roy Clarke's creation is filmed on location, a poignant score and an old-fashioned laugh track accompany the slapstick antics, making Summer Wine feel more like a product of the 1960s than the 1990s, though the series began in 1973 (and ended in 2010). If the acting is broad, the off-the-wall situations don't exactly call out for subtlety, making for hours of silly, harmless fun. --Kathleen C. Fennessy Product Description Last of the Summer Wine: Vintage 1995-Reserve (DVD) The world's longest-running sitcom returns with more antics from everyone's favorite geriatrics! After seeing Seymour off, Compo and Clegg intend to take over his position as headmaster. Foggy returns from Bridlington, but Compo and Clegg keep missing him. Once Foggy finally reunites with Compo and Clegg, though, he loses them while out on a walk, leading him to come up with an idea to create portable radios. Later, Foggy's flare for inventing continues when he starts a game of bicycle polo. The trio's youthful antics lead them into training for a barrel rolling event, playing soccer for charity, and restoring an old boat…with the hopes of taking Nora on her maiden voyage! The lads even join Smiler in a search for a new place to live. Don't miss the next installment of adventures with these loveable old men! ]]>
