About this item
Product Description
Magical Strings' tenth album, Legend of Inishcahey, is a captivating collection of instrumental brilliance inspired by journeys to Ireland and beyond, combining their distinctive blend of Celtic harp, hammered dulcimer, whistles, valiha (Malagasy bamboo harp) and concertina. Harper/composer Philip Boulding and wife Pam are joined by two family members on violin and 'cello on this sea journey from Ireland's mystic past to the iresistibly danceable influences from Madagascar, Jamaica and Morocco. Special quests include master 'cellist Eugene Friesen, percussionist Jarrod Kaplan, and oud player Tarik Banzi.
Review
"Philip's playing and composition comes from those very secret inner spaces that mark the work of Billie Holiday and Martin Hayes, that give voice to a body of work. Few in the history of the harp bring the soulful passion and warmth that Philip does.
"Musicianship, composing, arranging and passionate execution are at the very highest level here. Major release in the instrumental music field with strong Celtic ties. Highly recommended." -- Chris Lunn, Victory Music Review
From the Label
"I was profoundly moved by Legend of Inishcahey and filled with joy and happiness! I can never express these heart-felt emotions in any words. This CD has become my treasure."
From the Artist
In our 20 years as professional musicians, we had the most fun creating "Legend of Inishcahey" our 10th and favorite album. We had a pre-production meeting with our long-time friend, producer and engineer, Billy Oskay, of Portland, Oregon (Nightnoise and Windham Hill artist) during which we determined that above all, we would all have a good time on this project. We lived up to our promise, recorded many of the tracks live together in the studio with relatively few overdubs, creating a sense of cohesiveness, intimacy, and danceableness that holds together well through the great variety of instrumentation and musical influences from Ireland to Madagascar.
The title track, composed in Ireland, takes us on a journey from our Celtic spiritual roots, based on an archetypal vision of mankind's struggle to transform darkness within and without.
From the opening track "Stroll With Me", a musical reflection of my childhood in Jamaica, on solo harp, to "Vali Carol", a string trio composed on the Valiha (a bamboo harp from Madagascar), to "House on the Hill" a lively set of Irish reels learned in County Clare, to the closing "End of the Day", composed on our last day in Ireland overlooking the western sea from an old stone cottage at sunset, this album is a current reflection of our world Celtic journeys, and a true labor of love by our family quartet on Celtic harp, hammered dulcimer, violin, 'cello, and whistles. We are ever grateful for wonderful musical contributions and talents of our friends, cellist Eugene Friesen (on the harp/cello improvisation "Adrift"), percussionists Jarrod Kaplan, Tarik Banzi, Sean Sharp, and of course, the master work of Billy Oskay. We hope you enjoy listening to this album as much as we enjoyed making it.
About the Artist
Philip and Pam Boulding are the creators of Magical Strings' distinctive music, described by The Washington Post as "warm, graceful and sonically gorgeous", revolving around a tightly-knit blend of Celtic harps and hammered dulcimers, colorfully augmented by pennywhistles, concertina, valiha (Malagasy harp), violin, 'cello and percussion. Over the past 20 years they have drawn a large and loyal following worldwide, captivated by their energetic arrangements of Celtic music and their own engaging compositions, intertwining Celtic roots with classical/world music influences. Since 1980 Magical Strings has recorded 10 albums on Flying Fish/Rounder, Earthbeat Records, and their own label, Magic Hill Music, which have recieved a growing stream of international airplay and acclaim over the years. Since 1980 they have toured throughout the United States, Canada, the British Isles, and Japan, including touring and recording with Dan Fogelberg and appearances on the nationally-syndicated A Prairie Home Companion.
Also teachers, instrument builders, founders of a music school, and parents of 5 musical children, Philip and Pam seem to have boundless energy for their creative life, which is nurtured by their home on a beautiful farm nestled against Magic Hill, overlooking the Puget Sound.
