About this item

Amazon.com There may not be a serious smooth jazz fan alive who, even on first hearing, wouldn't recognize the band playing the title track. Such is the compositional imprint guitarist and leader Russ Freeman has left on the genre. On the other hand, his writing style, even the way he voices his music and the overall sound of his band, has been so imitated and saturated that the Rips just being the Rips has almost become a smooth jazz cliché. This is just another Rippingtons album, but is that a bad thing? For this release, Freeman and his boys did add a real horn section, arranged by the ubiquitous Jerry Hey, instead of multi-layered keyboard pads, and on solos the band has turned the ripping up just a tad, particularly keyboardist Bill Heller on "Mr. 3." On two tracks, buried deep in the album, "Stingray" and "17 Mile Drive," the Ripps do let it rip. On those tunes, the band is saying "this is what we could do and where we can go," but on most of this album, they're saying "this is what we have to do because so many Rippingtons fans have been down this old, comfortable road with us before." --Mark Ruffin Product description The Rippingtons Featuring Russ Freeman – Let It Ripp / Peak Records Audio CD 2003 / PKD-8514-2 UPC 013431851424 /// Let It Ripp is The Rippingtons' 12th album, released in 2003. The Rippingtons are an American contemporary jazz group, mainly relating to the genres smooth jazz, jazz fusion, jazz pop, and crossover jazz. Formed in 1985 by guitarist and band leader Russ Freeman, their career has spanned more than three decades. With a revolving door of musicians, Freeman has been the only consistent member. Many of their songs have been played during The Weather Channel's Local on the 8s forecast segments. The band's mascot is a grinning, sunglasses-wearing, jazz cat which appears in the artwork of all the band's releases and on their official website. /// Label: Peak Records – PKD-8514-2 Format: CD, Album Country: US Released: 2003 Genre: Jazz, Pop Style: Easy Listening, Smooth Jazz /// Tracklist: 1 Let It Ripp 5:10 2 Mr. 3 4:31 3 Lucky Charm 5:15 4 A Private Getaway 4:27 5 High Life 5:15 6 Avalon 4:05 7 Bella Luna 3:56 8 Stringray 4:44 9 17 Mile Drive 4:12 10 Cast A Spell 4:23 11 Get Over It 4:24 A&R – Valerie Ince Art Direction, Photography By – Sonny Mediana Bass – Kim Stone Drums – Dave Karasony Engineer [Additional] – Marko Ruffolo Executive-Producer – Andi Howard Guitar, Guitar [Guitar Synth], Keyboards, Producer, Written-By, Executive-Producer – Russ Freeman (2) Keyboards – Bill Heller (2) Management – Andi Howard Entertainment Mastered By – Doug Sax, Robert Hadley Mixed By – Nick Sodano Percussion – Scott Breadman Saxophone – Eric Marienthal
