Machete Kills, the director/cowriter/cinematographer/editor/composer's second feature-length rendition of the concept, still boasts a freakish amount of enthusiasm, but the central gag is beginning to feel rather strained at this point. While the combination of deliberately broad performances and CGI explosions is far from dull--few filmmakers can equal Rodriguez's Wile E. Coyote zeal for cartoonish bodily trauma--the line between knowing parody and actual nonsensical exploitation flick has grown more than a little murky. Beginning with a hilarious coming attraction for the next film in the series (can a movie spoil itself?), the story finds the ludicrously cool title character (Danny Trejo) accepting a mission to capture a Mexican warlord (Demian Bichir) with missiles aimed at the White House. Charlie Sheen shows up as the President of the United States, because this is the sort of movie that this is. Rodriguez has always had a knack for attracting seemingly overqualified talent to his proudly homegrown enterprises, and he outdoes himself here, with folks such as Antonio Banderas, Sofía Vergara, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, and Lady Gaga (?) all gleefully getting their freak on. Game as everyone involved is, however, the middle of the film remains a mess, with a number of flashbacks and shootouts that serve no real purpose other than finding new stuff to blow up. Happily, however, by the time the third act rolls around, Machete Kills discovers an unexpected influx of energy, via the appearance of a sinister arms dealer (Mel Gibson) whose evil plans introduce an entirely new genre for Rodriguez and Co. to goof around with.
