About this item

Review ...Great energy and smart as hell -- a must-hear for any keyboard player... (review of "Got Sauce," Soul Sauce) -- Richard Leiter, Keyboard magazine ...Potyen s solo was a model of ballad playing, soft, lyrical, building gently... -- Dave Roberts, "All About Jazz" ...Simply put, if Potyen hadn't learned to play the piano, it would have been a crime against humanity... -- Jean Bartlett, Pacifica Tribune Product Description This new solo piano release by veteran keyboardist Paul Potyen contains twelve classic jazz standards, performed in an understated, elegant manner. 'I felt it was time to record some of my all-time favorite tunes in a simple, straightforward style,' Potyen remarks. 'It's in keeping with my current lifestyle, having recently moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Steamboat Springs, CO.' The CD shows yet another side of the versatile pianist, who has played with the Tony Williams Lifetime, the Headhunters, Chet Baker, Mel Torme, Jimmy Witherspoon, Tom Harrell, Mark Murphy, Bobby McFerrin, Mark Isham, and the San Francisco Symphony, to name a few. His previous outing also on Guacamole Records was as pianist with Latin-Jazz group Soul Sauce. Titled, 'Got Sauce?,' that release has garnered excellent reviews with it's Cal Tjader-inspired sound. Artist biography: Paul Potyen has been in the music business for more years than he is willing to admit. He has composed, arranged, performed and produced music for countless CDs, radio and TV commercials, films and production music libraries, including three CDs by jazz singer Madeline Eastman, who was nominated 'Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition' in the 1995 Downbeat Jazz Critic's Poll. As a keyboard player, his credits include Chet Baker, Tony Williams, Mark Murphy, the Headhunters, Bobby McFerrin, Jimmy Witherspoon, Tom Harrell, Terry Bozzio, Pat O'Hearn, Mark Isham, Mel Torme, Henry Mancini, Ray Drummond, Mike Formanek, Ron Stallings, Bruce Forman, Benny Velarde, Pete Escovedo, John Santos, Andy Narrell, Eddie Marshall, Donald Bailey, Vince Lateano, Chris Connor, Phil Grenadier, Dave Pike, Charles McPherson, Eddie Henderson, and his own progressive latin band, Cañoneo. He is the featured pianist with the Bay Area Latin/Jazz band, Soul Sauce, on their recent CD, 'Got Sauce?' He has also played keyboards with The San Francisco Symphony, as well as for many musical theater productions in San Francisco. During the '80s he co-led the San Francisco Forty Niners Jazz Band, which played at Candlestick Park and other Bay Area venues. Paul has also been active in jazz education. Formerly on the faculty at the Jazz school in Berkeley, CA, he is currently a faculty member at Colorado Mountain College, Alpine Campuse, where he teaches History of Jazz, and other music courses. He moved to Steamboat Springs in September 2001, and lives with his wife, Cate, and their dog in a solar-powered straw bale house they built. Paul has also worked as associate editor for Mix, the leading recording industry magazine. His education includes a masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, product design from Stanford.
