Musical sequences are interwoven with footage of rehearsals and interviews that provide historical context.

The Turkish setting is breathtaking, and the film offers a unique opportunity for Mozart devotees to see one of his works spring from fantasy to reality. The production, performed in the harem of the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, features exquisite set design and a top-notch cast including Paul Groves, Yelda Kodalli, Desiree Rancatore, Lynton Atkinson, Peter Rose and actor Oliver Tobias, with Sir Charles Mackerras conducting The Scottish Chamber Orchestra. More than just a performance film, Mozart in Turkey also studies the history of opera's fascination with Turkish culture and some illuminating biographical information about Mozart's life during the composition of ‘The Abduction’, his most popular opera during his lifetime. Works
Mozart: Die Entführung aus dem Serail

Press Reviews
"This is a fascinating and delightful DVD. We see and hear much of Mozart's score, impeccably performed by the SCO under Sir Charles Mackerras (complete with the requisite appoggiaturas). The cast is good, if not outstanding. Elijah Moshinsky's production, set in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul (rather than in the Pasha's country house), is imaginative and deeply satisfying; his comments to camera and in rehearsals are illuminating, his insights often original and seldom cranky. The camera-work is sensitive and beautiful...Oliver Tobias's Pasha is a superb and moving assumption and the cast act as well as sing with style and conviction (none more so than Yelda Kodalli, who in the finale touchingly mimes her gratitude and too-late found affection for the Pasha). After some less than happy experiences with the medium I find it doubly pleasing to be able to praise a DVD unreservedly...there is much to enjoy in this DVD, and I shall often return to it." (Early Music Review)

Cast
Paul Groves (Belmonte)
Yelda Kodalli (Konstanze)
Désirée Rancatore (Blonde)
Lynton Atkinson (Pedrillo)
Peter Rose (Osmin)
Oliver Tobias (Bassa Selim)
Scottish Chamber Choir & Orchestra; Charles Mackerras

Production
Company: BBC Worldwide
Stage Director: Elijah Moshinsky
Disc Information
Catalogue Number: OA0892D
Running Time: 88 minutes
Sound: Dolby Surround; Dolby Stereo
Aspect Ratio: 16:9 Anamorphic
Subtitles: EN, ES
Label: Opus Arte
ASIN: B0001BMMCM
VSKU: DBV.B0001BMMCM.A
Condition: Acceptable
Author/Artist:Yelda Kodalli|Dsire Rancatore|Oliver Tobias|Lynton Atkinson|Paul Groves|Gottlieb Stephanie Jr.|Peter Rose|Christoph Friedrich Bretzner|Mick Csaky
Binding: Dvd
Note: Any images shown are stock photographs and product may differ from what is shown.
Condition Notes: Individually inspected: Guaranteed to play perfectly or your money back.
