Gr 9 Up--In 2008, Marcelo Lucero, a young Ecuadorian immigrant, was murdered by a group of local high school students who traveled to the town of Patchogue, Long Island, with a chilling goal: kill any Latino person on the street. Lucero's murder revealed the bigotry hidden beneath the surface of a pastoral village--and tore the community apart. This documentary is a portrait of a broken town piecing itself back together through activism, art, and community gatherings. In interviews, families of all backgrounds express their shock, grief, and love. Lucero's brother gives speeches at local schools and shares his devastation--and hope for the future. Classmates and neighbors of the boys who killed Lucero share their sense of betrayal and horror. At the trial, Lucero's family offers condolences to the parents of the boys who killed their son, recognizing that their lives are also destroyed. The film leaves viewers craving more insight into their stories. How did the boys learn to hate and kill? This remains a mystery. And perhaps the enigma of hatred is what the filmmakers intended to communicate. However, the film doesn't offer much more insight than you would learn via news coverage. While it features seamless editing, excellent pacing, and good graphics, viewers will not find an in-depth exploration of the incident and its meaning here.--"Jess deCourcy Hinds, Bard High School Early College Queens, NY" Copyright 2012 Reed Business Information.
