About this item

About the Artist Zebra Junction is more than a unique sound. It is the collaborative effort of Flitz Alan, Micah Lundy and Whalen which has evolved into a dynamic, multifaceted musical experience. Surrounded by rare, vintage, hybrid and homespun instruments, Zebra Junction breathes a new life and creativity into almost any genre of music. Their sound is a fusion of ragtime, funk, rock, folk, blues and jazz which creates a distinct, open-minded style. Flitz, Micah and Whalen utilize every extremity, often playing multiple instruments at one time. They have the ability to rock out or keep the jam tight with any instrument (even a banjo-ukulele accompanied by a kazoo) and the results can cause even the most hard-core skeptic to get up and dance. The group lives by the attitude, "Music is everywhere and in everything." More importantly, they feel the music is in the audience. Zebra Junction feeds on audience participation, whether dancing, singing along or even directly contributing to the jam, the audience makes each show uncommon. It's not unusual to find the group incorporating the vibe of the crowd into their music. The band's goal for each performance is that a good time should be had by all. Flitz and Micah both came from opposite sides of the country, where they each picked up different musical influences. Micah, with a long running love for acoustic instruments, and Flitz, experimenting in the cross-pollination of different music styles, came together at the Olde Town Pickin' Parlor in Arvada, Colorado. There they put their heads together and started developing their unique style, branching out to jazz, ragtime and anything else that they could fit into the scheme. After performing as a duo for some time, Flitz and Micah met Whalen, Zebra Junction's newest member. Whalen adds to Zebra Junction's layers with his love of jamming, warm vocals and mad skills on the toy piano. With access to a variety of instruments as well as professional musicians, Zebra Junction is constantly exploring new territories and shaping new boundaries in their music. Ranging from straight-laced reock to good-time banjo, Zebra Junction holds appeal for any audience. "When it comes to our music, there are no limits to ideas and innovations," says Flitz. Product Description Zebra Junction's debut album, "Orange Porridge", was born fireside in a rustic, snow covered cabin nestled in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. A blending of styles, a mixture of acoustic & electric sounds, influenced by the likes of MMW, Phish, Pink Floyd, Charles Mingus, the Beatles and Gillian Welch. This album rapidly takes the listener from the cabin down in to the bowels of the city (Emma Baits). Then onto the back porch for some down home sounds (Lightning For Now). Flirt with a waitress in the diner (Waitress Blues) while free jazz drifts down from the bandstand (Skinny Dancing). Spin and swirl within strands of DNA towards the ocean deep (Shelter). Cruise down the road (Beamer Boogie) into the night under a full moon (Dance Tonight). When morning light creeps over the hills (Daybreak) head back up to the cabin for solace and come full circle again (Cabin Jam). Three musicians constantly trading instruments and messing with the mix. A curious fascination with childrens' instruments. A wealth of textures and sounds created with handmade/modified instruments. Recorded in downtown Denver with talented guest musicians, masterful mixing and great production. A feast for headphone enthusiasts. Life works in funny colors and weird odors, hence orange porridge.
