About this item
Many people, including law enforcement, believe nothing ever happens in “the country”. But as you read the experiences of a deputy sheriff in rural northeast Colorado spanning the 1970’s through the 90’s, you may think differently.
Jim Crone spent the first half of his law enforcement in Morgan County; working in a small county jail, patrolling country roads and investigating crimes from check fraud to murder.
He tells stories first person of an eighty-mile chase with an escapee, recovering bodies from a head-on train crash, fighting a drug-crazed man armed with a knife, a spear and a Doberman, and being trapped underwater during a dive team operation.
Even as a high school Cadet, he experienced chasing a juvenile who ran from the county jail. Riding along with deputies he was at the scene where a convicted rapist prison escapee killed himself after murdering a family halfway across the state. And at age 17 attended his first autopsy following a drug-related killing.
From stories of facing a drunk juvenile trapped in the store he was burglarizing, the combative DUI talking tongues, the sad-eyed local drunk named Danny Patch, to the parents who have just lost a child. From facing the unknowns of what we now know as PTSD, to the confusing perceptions of the mind in an officer involved shooting.
And as a long-time EMT and paramedic, the author tells of the high-speed crashes, the pain and sorrow after the fight to save friends and neighbors….and kids.
These stories will give you another insight as to what it’s like to be a law enforcement officer and the reality of the best job in the world, and the greatest show on earth.
