preachers-kid-dvd
Preacher's Kid (DVD)
Amazon.com

"Family, faith, and music" are the unifying themes in Preacher's Kid, a film that manages to both embrace and transcend formula and predictability while delivering an inspirational message about parents' obligation to let their kids lead their own lives and learn their own lessons, even if the education comes at the school of hard knocks. Former Destiny's Child member LeToya Luckett is Angie King, featured singer at a church presided over by her father (Gregory Alan Williams), a bishop and well-meaning but clueless widower who treats his adult daughter as if she were still a child. Angie's already chafing under his iron hand when a traveling gospel musical comes to town; uplifted by the music and infatuated with the show's sexy, charismatic star (Durrell "Tank" Babbs), she joins the cast and hits the road, despite her father's dire warning about the consequences of what he regards as a betrayal. One needn't be a psychic to foresee much of what happens after that, as the filmmaking isn't exactly subtle; the musical is entitled "Daddy, Can I Come Back Home?" while the Babbs character, who turns out to be a very bad dude, is named "Devlin" (get it?). But while there are abundant clichés (including the good man Angie leaves behind, her steady descent into sin, and various stereotypical characters), Preacher's Kid isn't nearly as soft as it might have been, earning its PG-13 rating with some profanity and scenes (none of them very graphic) of drinking, drugging, and domestic violence. What's more, the cast is fine and the music is good (Luckett is a powerful and convincing singer), and it's tough to find fault with a largely wholesome and uplifting piece of entertainment in which the faithful ultimately prosper, the truly sinful get their rightful comeuppance, and a profound question--Is it possible to love yourself and God?--is addressed with dignity and humility. --Sam Graham

Product Description

Preacher's Kid (DVD)
Tired of her life as a minister's daughter and longing to experience more of the world, a 20-something young woman with the talent to enthrall people with her voice joins a gospel show but discovers that life on the road isn't what she had imagined. Now, she fears going home with nothing to show for herself, or worse, to a father who no longer loves her... In this modern retelling of the story of the "Prodigal Son" set to a Gospel sound track, young Angie King leaves her life as the Preacher's Kid working in the community and singing in church, lured by dreams of fame and charismatic singer Devlin Mitchell. But she eventually learns that the dream and reality are far different as Devlin tires of her, then turns abusive, and that performing in a traveling show is not as rewarding as singing for a congregation that loves her. Now, the only question is will her pride ... and her father ... allow her to return home? ]]>
ASIN: B003ESP636
VSKU: DBV.B003ESP636.N
Condition: New
Author/Artist:LeToya Luckett|Durrell "Tank" Babbs|Clifton Powell|Essence Atkins|Sharif Atkins|Trey Songz|Gregory Alan Williams|Raéven Kelly|Tammy Townsend|Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs|King Kedar|Ella Joyce|Kierra Sheard|Carlos Davis|DeEtta West|Richard J.
