About this item

Product Description LONDON'S MOST LOVABLE MASTER THIEF MAKES LIGHT WORK OF HIGH CRIMES "A PROPER GEM" —Daily Express (U.K.) Aging criminal mastermind Des simply won’t go gentle into that good night. Donning all manner of disguises, he can fool the authorities—and his marks—into thinking he’s just another harmless old geezer. Behind his spectacles, though, Des always has his eye out for the next big score in diamonds, gold, or piles of cold cash. His intricately planned heists prove so daring and so outrageous that he always gets his target. And as for Des’s victims—well, they get what they deserve. Rough Diamond showcases the talents of renowned British actor Sir David Jason (A Touch of Frost, Only Fools and Horses, Porterhouse Blue). Whether masquerading as a gimpy prison inmate, a button-down umbrella magnate, or a bookish security consultant, Jason imbues Des with irresistible charm and deliciously sly wit. These quirky capers will keep you guessing and chuckling right up to end, when Des always has the last laugh. DVD SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE text interviews with cast members and cast filmographies. Broadcast in the UK as Diamond Geezer Amazon.com Imagine Ocean's Eleven for the British silver-fox set: Rough Diamond is a cracking crime adventure featuring the savviest senior criminal mind on either side of the Pond. (It was originally broadcast in the U.K. under the rather more charming title Diamond Geezer.) The splendid character actor David Jason, who plays our anti-hero, Des, is a master of disguises and is riveting to watch--and root for. The series opens in HRH Barton Prison, where the action unfolds in a leisurely, rich fashion, characters introduced with nuance and depth. Only about halfway through the first hour do we realize that Des, the simpleton entrusted with the prison tea cart, may have more going on behind those thick spectacles than we thought. It's not giving away too much to reveal that Des is in fact a master criminal, whose time behind bars has been well calculated as part of his next grand caper. The dialogue is first rate; after a first-time offender is found to have contraband in his cell, the prison governor is shocked and demands to know how such a thing could have happened; his deputy wryly responds, "I don't know if you're aware, sir, but the place is full of criminals." The series episodes follow Des after his daring prison break and into his other capers that he seems to pursue for the sheer delight. The show is shot on location with sumptuous production values and witty blink-and-you'll-miss-them touches. In an episode shot in the south of France involving a jewel heist, a character is seen trotting down a stairwell adorned with a vintage French movie poster for "La Main au collet"--To Catch a Thief. Extras are a wee bit disappointing. "Interviews" with cast members turn out to be text-only, though still contain interesting nuggets. Of Des, Jason says, "He only takes what he needs to live on, although I suppose you could say that he has expensive tastes." A gem, this. --A.T. Hurley Review "4 stars = Outstanding" -- Pittsburgh Post Gazette "David Jason in the lead, the show has instant credibility and his performance is terrific" -- DVD Authority "Delightful series, and one wishes more episodes had been made" -- San Francisco Chronicle "Healthy servings of downright hilarity" -- Blogcritics Magazine "Showcasing Jason at his best" -- MemorableTV.com "The twists and turns will keep you guessing, David Jason will keep you engaged, and you will truly enjoy watching Rough Diamond." -- BlogCritics Magazine "Will appeal to fans of such movies as "Ocean's Eleven" and old TV shows as "It Takes a Thief."" -- The Washington Post
