About this item

Demand for teachers and education professionals in American jails and prisons has grown, and continues to grow, with both the increase in the number of incarcerated individuals as well as the movements for prison reform and Second Chance Pell grants. This workbook aims to help prepare aspiring teachers for the unique needs, barriers, and rewards of working with incarcerated students and within the correctional institutions that house them. It is also intended to help inform current and experienced corrections education teachers. Comprised of four chapters, the content focuses on the role of the prison teacher, the importance of trust-building, various leadership models that help influence best practices for instruction, and specific issues for the pre-college level classroom and the problematic nature of standardized testing, especially the GED.
