With greater importance than ever before, the matches proved to be three days of emotional, intense, and truly awe-inspiring golf. After the victory at Brookline in 1999, the American team was strongly favored to retain the trophy. However, the European team was equally intent on claiming victory. The stage was set for an awesome confrontation and this tournament definitely lived up to its billing as the World's Greatest Golfing Event. After two days of enthralling action, the scores were even and Team USA entered the final day expecting to dominate the singles. Captain Curtis Strange and his tem, which included the world's top two players, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, battled courageously. Paul Azinger, played the shot of the tournament-holing from a greenside bunker on the 18th, depriving the Europeans of the winning point. Looking like the match was going down to the wire, Ryder Cup rookie Paul McGinley sunk a 9-foot putt to regain the coveted trophy.
