The Leonberger is like no other breed. They tend to be gentle giants, but their low bark is enough to scare off anyone who doesn’t know about their affectionate temperament.
One of the earliest intentionally bred “cross-breeds”; the Leonberger typically has some of the best traits from each of its Newfoundland and Saint Bernard ancestors. With a higher stamina than most large breeds, this is not a giant breed couch potato, but a dog that will want you to go out and be active.
With a life expectancy of only 8 or 9 years, it never seems nearly long enough time. But those years can be full of a lot of fun and activity, especially if you love to swim. Whether you live alone or have a large family, this is a dog that loves people and playing. And they have the kind of patience you want if you have small kids.
